The building and its two concert halls
The Musikverein opened in January 1870 as the home of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Vienna's society of friends of music. Theophil Hansen designed it in the historicist style of the Ringstrasse era, and its Great Hall, better known as the Golden Hall, quickly became famous for its acoustics as much as for its gilded caryatids and painted ceiling. The Vienna Philharmonic still records and broadcasts its New Year's Concert from this hall.
Two halls matter for visitors booking tickets. The Golden Hall seats roughly 1,700 people plus standing places and delivers the full orchestral experience; the Brahms Hall is a chamber hall of around 600 seats with a more intimate, drawing-room character. Both are used for the tourist-oriented classical programmes listed above, so check which hall a date uses before you book.
- Golden Hall (Grosser Saal)The iconic gilded hall. Parterre seating is flat, so the balcony and the first rows of the parterre offer the clearest sightlines.
- Brahms Hall (Brahms-Saal)Smaller and air-conditioned, ideal for chamber-sized ensembles and for anyone who prefers to sit close to the musicians.
- AddressMusikvereinsplatz 1, 1010 Vienna, between Karlsplatz and the State Opera. The visitor entrance faces Bösendorferstrasse.
- Nearest stationsKarlsplatz (U1, U2, U4) is about three minutes on foot; the State Opera tram stops on the Ring are five minutes away.
Which Musikverein concert should you book?
The programmes in our catalogue fall into two families. The Vienna Mozart Orchestra performs Mozart and Strauss highlights in historical costumes and wigs, in the style of an eighteenth-century musical academy, with singers and soloists; performances run about 105 minutes and start at 20:15. The Classic Exclusive series presents Die SchlossCapelle or Camerata Classica in complete symphonic works by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Vivaldi and other composers; programmes change by date, last about two hours and start at 20:00.
Choose the Mozart Orchestra if you want the costumed, best-of Vienna evening that first-time visitors usually expect. Choose Classic Exclusive if you would rather hear complete symphonies or Vivaldi's Four Seasons in a concert-hall setting without theatrical staging. Both are available in the Golden Hall and, on selected dates, in the Brahms Hall.

- Classic ExclusiveComplete works by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Vivaldi and others, programme varies by date, about 120 minutes, from EUR 33.

Practical tips for your visit
Doors normally open thirty minutes before the concert. Arrive early enough to check coats, find the hall and take in the foyer; late arrivals are usually admitted only at a suitable break in the music. There is no formal dress code for the concerts listed here: smart-casual is the norm, and many guests dress up a little for the Golden Hall simply because the room invites it.
The Musikverein sits at the edge of the historic centre. Combine the concert with an early dinner near Karlsplatz or the Opera, or with a walk along the Ring afterwards. Photography is permitted before the concert and during applause but not while the musicians are playing.
Musikverein or Konzerthaus?
Vienna's two great concert houses are a ten-minute walk apart and both host tourist-friendly classical programmes. The Musikverein is the older, more famous building with the gilded hall; the Wiener Konzerthaus is a larger Jugendstil-era complex with several halls and a slightly more contemporary atmosphere. If the hall itself is the attraction, book the Musikverein. If your dates only work for a Konzerthaus programme, you will not be disappointed either. Our comparison guide goes through the differences in detail.

Frequently asked questions
Can I book tickets for the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic here?
No. The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert is allocated by the orchestra's own ballot and is not sold through ticket agencies. The Musikverein concerts in our catalogue are the Vienna Mozart Orchestra and Classic Exclusive programmes, which take place on regular dates throughout the year in the same Golden Hall.
Is there a dress code at the Musikverein?
There is no formal dress code for these concerts. Smart-casual clothing is appropriate; jackets and dresses are common but not required.
How long does a Musikverein concert last?
The Vienna Mozart Orchestra programmes last about 105 minutes and the Classic Exclusive concerts about two hours, including an interval. Exact durations are shown on each event page.
Which seats are best in the Golden Hall?
The parterre is flat, so the front rows and the balcony give the clearest view of the stage. Higher ticket categories are closer to the stage; the sound is good throughout the hall.
How do I get to the Musikverein by public transport?
Take the U-Bahn to Karlsplatz (lines U1, U2 and U4) and follow the signs for Musikverein or Oper; the hall is about three minutes away on foot.
