A concert house with four halls

The Konzerthaus opened on 19 October 1913 with a festive prelude Richard Strauss composed for the occasion. Ludwig Baumann designed it together with the theatre architects Fellner and Helmer, and the result is a late-Jugendstil building that feels lighter and more modern than the Musikverein. Its Great Hall seats around 1,800, the Mozart Hall 704, the Schubert Hall about 320, and the Berio Hall is a flexible studio space.

For visitors, the Mozart Hall is the one that matters: it is the home of the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra's Strauss and Mozart concerts on the dates listed above. Seating is on the ground floor and a balcony, and because the hall is compact, even the rear rows are close to the stage.

The Vienna Hofburg Orchestra at the Konzerthaus

The Strauss and Mozart concert is a selection programme rather than a staged opera: an ensemble of up to forty musicians plays waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family alongside Mozart, with opera singers and a ballet couple. Admission is at 20:00 for a 20:30 start, and the evening lasts about ninety minutes without a long interval. Tickets start at EUR 55, and every category is shown with its final price on the event page.

Before and after the concert

The Konzerthaus is a few steps from the Stadtpark with its Johann Strauss monument, the gilded statue that appears on most Vienna postcards; a walk past it before the concert is the obvious warm-up for a Strauss evening. The Ringstrasse, the Hotel Imperial and the Musikverein are all within ten minutes on foot, so dinner in the Karlsplatz or Ring area works well.

Coats can be checked in the cloakroom, and the building has a café and bars for the interval. Doors open thirty minutes before the start; there is no formal dress code.

Konzerthaus or Musikverein?

Both houses host classical concerts aimed at visitors, and both are easy to reach from the centre. The Musikverein wins on fame and on the sheer spectacle of the Golden Hall; the Konzerthaus offers a slightly more relaxed atmosphere and, in the Mozart Hall, a closer connection to the performers.
