A palace with Mozart in its history
The palace was built in the early eighteenth century for the Marquis of Rofrano and passed to the Auersperg princes in the 1770s, whose name it still carries. Its design is attributed to the circle of Vienna's great baroque architects, Fischer von Erlach and Hildebrandt, and its garden front once looked over open ground towards the city walls. On 13 March 1786 a private performance of Mozart's Idomeneo took place here under the composer's direction, one of the reasons the palace features in every Mozart itinerary of Vienna.
Concerts today use the palace's ballrooms, above all the Rosenkavalier Hall, with chandeliers, mirrors and stucco that suit a programme of Mozart and Strauss. Seating is arranged for each performance; ticket categories reflect distance from the stage.

The Imperial Gala Concert
The Imperial Gala Concert is a best-of evening built for visitors who want the full Viennese repertoire in one sitting: Eine kleine Nachtmusik and the Queen of the Night aria, the Blue Danube, the Emperor Waltz and Wiener Blut, Winter from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Lehár and the Radetzky March. Vienna soloists, a soprano and a ballet couple perform with orchestra and piano; the programme varies by date and the event page lists examples.
Each concert day has two performances, at 18:00 and at 20:00, and each lasts about 105 minutes. The dinner-and-concert option adds a four-course meal in the palace before the 20:00 concert. The event page shows the dates and the final price of each option.

Dinner and concert at Palais Auersperg
With the dinner-and-concert option the whole evening stays under one roof: dinner guests are seated in the palace from 18:15 and go on to the 20:00 concert. You choose a classic, vegetarian or children's four-course menu; vegan and gluten-free dishes are available on request. The 18:00 concert suits families with older children: it starts well before the 20:30 palace concerts elsewhere.
Dress is smart-casual. The palace has a cloakroom, and the neighbourhood around Josefstädter Strasse and the Rathaus has plenty of cafés for a drink afterwards.
Palais Auersperg or Schönbrunn?
Both offer Mozart and Strauss in imperial rooms with dinner options. Schönbrunn is the grander setting with the famous palace and gardens and a 20:30 start; Palais Auersperg is smaller, closer to the centre and plays at 18:00 and 20:00. If your evening is short or you are staying near the Ring, Auersperg is the practical choice; if the Schönbrunn palace itself is on your list, combine the palace tour with the Orangery concert instead.
