A palace with Mozart in its history
The palace was built in the early eighteenth century for the Marquis of Rofrano and passed to the Auersperg princes in the 1770s, whose name it still carries. Its design is attributed to the circle of Vienna's great baroque architects, Fischer von Erlach and Hildebrandt, and its garden front once looked over open ground towards the city walls. On 13 March 1786 a private performance of Mozart's Idomeneo took place here under the composer's direction, one of the reasons the palace features in every Mozart itinerary of Vienna.
Concerts today use the palace's ballrooms, above all the Rosenkavalier Hall, with chandeliers, mirrors and stucco that suit a programme of Mozart and Strauss. Seating is arranged for each performance; ticket categories reflect distance from the stage.
