Vivaldi Four Seasons in Vienna: Concerts, Tickets and Venues

Composer guide

Antonio Vivaldi spent the last year of his life in Vienna and died here in 1741, largely forgotten, in a house near the Karlskirche. Today his Four Seasons is the most requested baroque work in the city's concert programmes, played complete in the Musikverein and in movements at palace concerts. Because Vivaldi appears on rotating programmes rather than in a dedicated series, this guide explains which concerts include him, how to check a date's programme and what the Vienna connection is.

Vivaldi's last year in Vienna

Vivaldi arrived in Vienna in 1740, probably hoping for the patronage of Emperor Charles VI, who had admired his music. The emperor died within months, the theatres closed for mourning, and the composer, by then out of fashion in Venice, found himself without income. He died on 28 July 1741 and was buried in the hospital cemetery beside the Karlskirche, on ground now occupied by the Technical University; a memorial plaque marks the spot. Vienna remembered him only in the twentieth century, when the baroque revival made the Four Seasons world famous.

The Four Seasons themselves date from 1725, four violin concertos published in Amsterdam as part of his opus 8, each prefaced by a sonnet describing birdsong, summer storms, harvest dances and winter ice. They are the reason Vivaldi is on so many Vienna programmes: the movements are short, vivid and instantly recognisable.

Where the Four Seasons is played in Vienna

The Classic Exclusive series at the Musikverein is the surest way to hear the complete Four Seasons: Die SchlossCapelle and Camerata Classica include Le quattro stagioni on selected dates in both the Golden Hall and the Brahms Hall, alongside Mozart, Haydn and J. C. Bach. The programme is date-specific and shown on the event page, so choose a date that lists the work.

The Vienna Baroque Orchestra plays Vivaldi alongside Mozart, Donizetti, Tchaikovsky and Brahms in the Red Salon of Palais Schönborn-Batthyány, a seventy-five-minute concert with opera singers. The Imperial Gala Concert at Palais Auersperg includes Winter from the Four Seasons in its best-of programme with soprano and ballet, and the Vienna Residence Orchestra's Vienna Classic Concerts name Vivaldi among their regular composers next to Mozart and Strauss.

How to make sure you hear Vivaldi

Vienna's visitor concerts rotate their programmes, and Vivaldi is a guest rather than a headliner. Three checks avoid disappointment: open the event page and read the programme notes for the specific date; prefer the Classic Exclusive dates that list Le quattro stagioni in full if the complete work matters to you; and treat the palace concerts as Mozart and Strauss evenings with a Vivaldi movement as a bonus. Programmes and performers can change, so the date's listing is the final word.

Vivaldi, Mozart or Strauss?

If you want one concert that covers Vienna's greatest hits, a Mozart and Strauss programme in a palace is the natural choice and usually includes a Vivaldi movement. If baroque music is the point, the Musikverein's Classic Exclusive dates with the complete Four Seasons and the Vienna Baroque Orchestra are the better fit. Our Mozart and Strauss guides cover the alternatives in detail.
